Yet another African Cup of Nations

THE fourth African Cup of Nations in just six seasons begins later today with replacement hosts Equatorial Guinea taking on Congo in Bata.

Yet, already - as that introductory paragraph suggests - this 30th edition of the tournament has endured a torrid build-up.

Original hosts Morocco first asked for a postponement until 2016, citing fears over the Ebola outbreak in west Africa. But, once the Confederation of African Football (CAF) stood firm, the North Africans pulled out altogether.

This was despite the fact that the Moroccan city of Casablanca had hosted Guinea's successful qualification campaign because the threat of Ebola meant the Guineans could not play at home.

Morocco's contradictory position therefore looks decidedly odd. It is nothing, though, compared to the subsequent illogical move by CAF to bestow hosting rights on Equatorial Guinea.

After all, the tiny central African country had been disqualified last July for fielding an ineligible player in a qualifying match. Now, bizarrely, they have qualified for the finals automatically as hosts.

Usefully at least, it is not a new role for Equatorial Guinea to take on. They were, in fact, hosts as recently as 2012 - but, back then, they shared the burden of the duties with neighbouring Gabon and only used their two biggest cities, Bata and Malabo.

This time, Mongomo and Ebebiyin - two outposts even by Equatoguinean standards - will also be responsible for overseeing the progress of part of the group phase as well as hosting a quarter final each.

Unsurprisingly, the short notice given to the two venues has resulted in concerns over infrastructure and security.

Additional fears that even the 5,000-capacity stadium in Ebebiyin will not be filled has led to the country's president Teodoro Obiang Nguema to pay for 40,000 tickets for fans to attend for free.

Of course, by "president", think instead of an oil-rich dictator who has been in power since 1979 and whose human rights abuses have been well-documented by advocacy agencies.

Suddenly, as cynical as it sounds, the CAF decision begins to make some sort of sense.

Seemingly driven by greed at the best of times - why else stage the Cup of Nations so often? - these were actually the worst of times for the organisation.

Their centrepiece tournament - older than the European Championships by three years - was hanging by a thread. It is no wonder that it went to the highest bidder.

And so, regardless of what happens over the next month in Equatorial Guinea, there will be a real sense of unease as to how this championship has still gone ahead.

Maybe, by asking for a postponement, Morocco had the right idea after all.

NIGERIA rolled back the years to become the champions of Africa for the first time since 1994, beating surprise package Burkina Faso in the Cup of Nations Final in Johannesburg.

Sunday Mba scored the only goal of the game just before half time, following up a Victor Moses shot by beating a defender and scoring past Burkinabe keeper Daouda Diakite.

Chelsea forward Moses was named man-of-the-match in the Final but, in truth, it was a contest of few chances in what was not a classic tournament.

The early stages of the 29th African Cup of Nations were dominated by draws, with more than half of the group games - 13 out of 24 - finishing level.

Holders Zambia were the big casualties in the opening round, unable to get anywhere near the standard which they set last year as they bowed out without a win (or a loss, for that matter).

Hosts South Africa almost joined the Zambians on the scrapheap when they fell 2-1 behind in their final group game against Morocco with just 10 minutes left.

But, thankfully for the home crowd, Bafana Bafana equalised to make it 2-2 and therefore did not repeat their failure at the 2010 World Cup when they failed to get out of the group stages.

Big guns Ghana and Ivory Coast also got through - and did so with the joint best records by taking seven points each from nine.

However, that was as far as Ivory Coast went, as Nigeria produced the first of three excellent performances in the knockout stage to win 2-1 with goals from tournament top scorer Emmanuel Emenike and Mba.

Incredibly, before then, the Super Eagles were 10 minutes from going out of the tournament at the first hurdle before two Moses penalties saw off Ethiopia.

And then, having beaten the Ivorians, Nigeria produced a brilliant display in the first half of their semi final against Mali.

Goals from Uwa Elderson Echiejile, Brown Ideye, and Emenike put the Nigerians 3-0, and they eventually prevailed 4-1 after Ahmed Musa had extended the lead on the hour.

The other semi final, meanwhile, was between Ghana and Burkina Faso. With Ivory Coast out, Ghana had taken on the favourites mantle, and the Black Stars had enjoyed a comfortable ride to the last four.

Topping a group unbeaten ahead of Mali, DR Congo and Niger, the Ghanaians only had to get past Cape Verde Isles in the quarter finals.

Cape Verde were one of the undoubted stories of the tournament. Despite being the smallest team in South Africa, with a population of around 500,000, the Blue Sharks qualified behind the hosts from Group A by beating Angola 2-1 with a stoppage time goal in the last set of games.

In the quarter finals too, the islanders put up a good fight, only for Ghana to progress thanks to two goals from Wakaso Mubarak - one was a penalty, and the other was a last-minute heart-breaker.

But the Burkinabe were not to be underestimated, either.

After all, the Stallions looked good in the group stages, finishing ahead of Nigeria, knocking out the Zambians, and thrashing Ethiopia 4-0.

The quarter final against Togo was much tougher going but the Burkinabe showed great resilience before player of the tournament Jonathan Pitroipa scored the winner on the stroke of half time in extra time.

Burkina Faso's semi final also went beyond 90 minutes after Bance's goal in the second half levelled Wakaso's early penalty.

Indeed, it went all the way to spot kicks with the Burkinabe winning 3-2 as Asamoah Gyan refused to step up for the Black Stars.

Having played all of those extra minutes in their previous two games, it was perhaps understandable that Burkina Faso looked the leggier of the two teams in the Final.

No doubt the underdogs were also slightly overawed by the occasion too. This was Burkina Faso's first ever African Cup of Nations Final and Nigeria could have won more handsomely.

Nevertheless, victory was achieved and it is an important milestone for coach Stephen Keshi who was also in the successful 1994 Super Eagles team.

Keshi thus became only the second coach, after Egypt's Mahmoud El-Gohary, to win the African Cup of Nations as both a player and a coach.

But, in his post-match interview, Keshi said: "Winning this is mainly for my nation.

"When I came on board a year and a half ago. my dream was to make all Nigerians happy, and to construct a great Nigerian team. We are not there yet, it's still in process."

That much is true - but Keshi has already achieved what so many Nigerian coaches had failed to do by instilling a winning mentality into his team.

Now the task for Keshi and Nigeria is to replicate their success over a longer period so that the west Africans become the powerhouse which they used to be 15-20 years ago.

In many respects, it is a much more difficult task.

ZAMBIA won the African Cup of Nations for the first time in history on an emotional night of destiny in Libreville in Gabon.

In April 1993, 18 Zambian footballers, four coaches, the FA chairman and two others died when a plane - on its way to a World Cup qualifier in Senegal - crashed into the Atlantic Ocean just off Libreville.

Now, almost 19 years later, another fine squad of Zambians rule the roost in Africa after beating odds-on favourites Ivory Coast 8-7 on penalties.

Stoppila Sunzu struck the 18th - and decisive - spot-kick of the shoot-out to become the toast of Lusaka as a southern African nation won the tournament for the first time since 1996.

The Final itself had finished 0-0, having flickered into life at times without ever fully catching alight.

Zambia started well with Nathan Sinkala drawing a save from Boubacar Barry within the first couple of minutes after a nicely-worked corner routine.

But, by the end of the half, Ivory Coast had imposed themselves on the game and, on the half hour mark, Yaya Toure should have done much better after being set up by Didier Drogba.

The second period was notable for its lack of quality around the box from both sides - until undoubtedly the best chance of the whole match fell to the Ivorians' lynchpin Drogba following a foul on Gervinho.

The Chelsea forward fluffed it, though - blazing his penalty way over the bar with 20 minutes left.

Having seen their skipper and star striker miss so horribly from 12 yards, the anxiety among the Ivorian players only seemed to increase further, and they struggled to make the breakthrough in the rest of the match.

They knew that, in the absence of Egypt, Cameroon and Nigeria, this edition of the Cup of Nations was Ivory Coast's best chance of becoming African champions for the first time since 1992.

Zambia, though, had been playing exceptionally right from the start of the tournament, beating another of the fancied sides, Senegal, on the opening day.

The Chipolopolo went on to top Group A as Senegal crashed out without a point despite fielding a four-pronged attack of Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse, Moussa Sow and captain Mamadou Niang.

However, the early part of the tournament was most notable for the fine performances of the two hosts.

Equatorial Guinea belied their lowly ranking of 151 to beat Libya and the Senegalese in their first two Nations Cup finals matches on their way to qualifying behind Zambia in Group A.

Gabon did even better, winning all three of their matches against Niger, Morocco, and Group C favourites Tunisia.

Indeed, the 3-2 comeback win over the Moroccans was particularly memorable as it was only secured in the 97th minute after the North Africans had looked to snatch a point by scoring a harshly-awarded penalty in the 93rd.

But the hosts' brave runs were ended on successive days in the quarter finals as Equatorial Guinea were beaten 3-0 by Ivory Coast, and the Gabonese were edged out on penalties by Mali.

In the semi finals, Ivory Coast won their fifth successive match without conceding a goal as they beat the Malians with a solitary goal from Gervinho's on the stroke of half time.

Meanwhile, Zambia - who had matched the Ivorians' result in the quarters with a 3-0 win of their own against another surprise package, Sudan - also won 1-0 in the semis, against Ghana.

It had been a much tighter occasion, though, with Emmanuel Mayuka scoring with just 12 minutes left - and only after Asamoah Gyan had missed a penalty for the 2010 World Cup quarter finalists.

And so, with Gyan having missed from the spot in the semis and with Drogba doing the same in the Final, it really did seem that fate had decreed that it would be the Zambians who would succeed.

Herve Renard's men still needed to hold their nerve in the shoot-out, though, especially when Drogba had made some amends for his earlier miss by scoring the fifth penalty.

That left Zambian keeper Kennedy Mweene needing to score - but he did not seem to feel the pressure at all, wrong-footing his opposite number, Barry, and slotting the ball in the corner.

With the shoot-out now in sudden death, it seemed that the first failure would be a decisive miss - and the writing was on the wall for Ivory Coast when Kolo Toure had his kick saved.

But Rainford Kalaba could not handle the pressure either, and he blazed over to leave the score still at 7-7.

Incredibly, after 14 successful penalties, there was a third successive miss as Gervinho added another chapter to his woeful season by sending the ball high and wide.

This time, the Zambians were not in the mood for charity as Sunzu fired past Barry to send the Zambians into an emotional frenzy.

Frenchman Renard dedicated his team's victory to the 1993 squad and his FA chairman Kalusha Bwalya who only survived the crash because he played in Europe with PSV Eindhoven.

Renard said: "I told them if we got to the final we would play in Gabon where the plane crashed. There was a special significance in that. They found the strength. I don't know where."

Fighting back the tears, he added: "Kalusha was one of the best Zambian players of the last century. Then he was coach of the national team, now our president.

"He knows how terrible this crash was for the nation. I want to dedicate this title to him, he gave me my chance when nobody knew me."

Nobody really gave Zambia much of a chance either - but this wonderful underdog story was always destined to have a happy ending.
